Research the price offered in part exchange to what you can get if you sell the car privately

Once you have obtained a price for your part exchange car from a garage, ask them that if you wish to sell the car privately and not part exchange it, will they still honour the price that they have quoted you for the sale of the new car. This is because some garages will offer you a smaller sum for your part exchange but take a bit off the purchase price of the new car. If they will honour it then it’s time to start doing your research.

Have a look on car sales websites such as Auto Trader and eBay to see what similar cars are going for. Don’t forget to compare not only age and spec of the car but also mileage and condition as this can have a great impact on the price you can expect to get. Also be sure to look for cars that are being sold privately not through a dealer as dealers always tend to put a bit extra on so you will not be getting the true value by comparing these.
